Safety Regulations For Storage and Handling of Raw Materials for Production of Hard PUR Foam
I. Properties, Hazard and Protection
It is necessary to aware that all industrial chemicals are more or less toxic. It depends on dosis, whereat they become toxic. Therefore, it is to work carefully also with substances, that are indicated as wholesome.
a) ISOCYANATES (MDI) - dark-yellow to brown, markedly foul-smelling liquid DIPHENYLMETHANE - 4,4 DI-ISOCYANATE (MDI and of polymeric multi-functional isocyanates) with flashing point above 200 °C, density 1,24 ± 0,05 g/cu. cm (at 20 °C), viscosity 400 ± 100 MPa. It must be stored in the temperature range of +15 up to 25 °C. The storage life according to the producer is 3 months /at most 6 months/ in untouched barrels (according to brands). MDI is not mixable with water (heavier than water). However, it reacts with water (with atmospheric moisture, too), that's why it is necessary to store it closed containers (barrels). At reaction with water the carbonic acid generates. In handling, except for actual production process, the isocyanate may not come into contact with polyol. MDI is not given in the toxin list, which forms the Appendix 1 and 2 to the Government Ordinance CR No. 192/1988 Coll. of toxins and some other deleterious substances. As the indicated substance is externally classified as a toxin (class 6.1, number 19c), it is necessary to observe increased caution at processing and handling.
||Contact, inhalation or swallow is deleterious; exhalation has irritant effect to eyes, skin and airways.
b) POLYOLS - polyols of ether or ester type, viscous, yellowy to brown liquids with OH-number 360 - 650. If they contain no catalysers and other additives, the storage life in untouched barrels is 6 months. At delivered systems of the component "A" the storage life is 8 weeks. In the course of work with polyols common safety regulations must be observed.
II. Storage and Handling of Raw Materials
Handling of raw materials for production of hard expanded polyurethane must be as follows:
1) As with flammable substances
2) As with other toxins (isocyanates)
